Learning Beyond Registration

Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) opportunities include a wide range of modules, courses and other development options which Health Education England (HEE) commission from local Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) and other education providers to meet the education and training needs of NHS staff working in pay bands 5-9.

LBR Training

Please note: from 2018 the LBR budget is not available to fund Mentorship Modules at any University. This is due to the NMC planned changes to the preparation of Mentors. For any Mentorship enquiries please contact the LEL team: learningenvironmentteam@southernhealth.nhs.uk

Booking Process for Training on LEaD

To be eligible for LBR funded training you are required to be 100% in date/compliant for your Statutory & Mandatory training (i.e. all your red buttons have turned green). You may be considered for funding if you have booked on to courses where buttons have gone red.

LEaD are aware that there may be times when the training is absolutely necessary despite you perhaps being non-compliant for statutory/mandatory training, in these instances your line manager will risk assess the need, and the booking may still go ahead.

Selecting and Accessing LBR modules

Your Directorate/Division will select LBR modules based on training needs for their service area, taking into account both current and future workforce needs.

If you find a university module that meets both your personal development needs and the service's needs, speak to your line manager. If the module is available, and subject to funding availability, you'll be asked to submit the relevant application and learning contract forms.

Please ensure that you meet ALL entry requirements including any prerequisites. You should have already read your chosen module's(pathway) details in full BEFORE you apply, so that you are fully aware of the study commitment involved.

Any requests for funding and modules will need to be signed by your line manager and authorised by LEaD.

Forms can be scanned / emailed, faxed to 023 8087 4164 or posted to the LBR Team based at Tatchbury Mount. If faxing, then please phone 023 8087 4057 to check all pages have been received.

Alternative sources of Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) funding

Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust also has a Flexible Learning Beyond Registration budget that can be accessed by staff at Bands 5-9. So if you cannot find a course or module that meets your needs at either the University of Southampton or Bournemouth University then Flexible LBR can be used to fund education and development via any education provider. Learning Contract for training funded from Flexible Budget

Funding is conditional upon you attending all required study days and submitting any required assignments. If you don't comply with these conditions you may be asked to pay back a proportion of the funding. 

Training Needs Analysis

The Training Needs Analysis (TNA) is sent out to Divisional Training Leads in October each year for them to identify training needs in their teams for the next training year. Your training request from any of the Education Providers will stand a better chance of being funded if it is included within the Training Needs Analysis Return. For requests after this period please go through your local Manager and Training Lead.
