Inanimate Loads – our mandatory eLearning for all non-patient-facing staff, designed to give guidance on safe ways to undertake moving and handling in the workplace.

Patient Handling – our mandatory course for all patient-facing staff is designed to update you with current best practice and guidance in patient handling to support you in your role.

Hoisting Awareness – if you undertake or supervise hoisting within the trust you will need to attend this one-day course looking at best practice guidance.

HoverJack – for those clinical areas that use a HoverJack, training is available for all staff.

Preventing Falls – provides knowledge and understanding as to why falls occur and possible strategies for preventing and managing them to support vulnerable individuals.

Slips, Trips & Falls – explores the risks of slips, trips and falls, and provides guidance on our duties, responsibilities and practical steps required to effectively manage people who have fallen.

Risk Assessment – delivered by the trust’s Health & Safety team, this training provides guidance in assessing and controlling risks in the workplace. The team can be contacted at

Medical Devices Management Policy  sets out the process and responsibilities for safe and effective management of medical devices throughout the trust. We should have the correct equipment when and where we need it.

Risk Assessment Procedure – corporate Health & Safety procedure, detailing the definitions, responsibilities and procedures (notably the Five Step Approach) when it comes to managing risk at work.


There are laws and guidance in place to inform what we do when it comes to manual handling, and to keep us safe. The main pieces of legislation can be found below:

Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) – employers must protect the health, safety and welfare of all of their employees, as well as others, on their premises.

Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (1998) – known as LOLER, this regulation places duties on people and companies who use lifting equipment. Lifting using equipment must be planned by a competent person, must be supervised and must be safe.  All equipment must also be inspected, serviced and maintained making it fit for use.

Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (2013) – known as RIDDOR this regulation states that we have a duty to report serious workplace incidents, occupational diseases and certain dangerous occurrences. This can be done via our trust Ulysses form.

Manual Handling Operations Regulations (1992) – MHOR defines manual handling and gives general advice about its application.

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998) – PUWER tells us that equipment needed for employees to do their job safety is to be provided, and it must be fit for purpose, safe to use, appropriate and maintained with health and safety measures in place.

Clinical Advisory Team – the trust have an advisory team to support clinical staff employed by the NHS, Adult Services and charitable organisations across Hampshire. The CAT team are able to assist with the management of complex cases and postural facilitation for patients and service users who have a Hampshire GP.
