Revalidation – changing the way you register with the NMC

Keeping your patients and service users safe and providing them with the best possible care is the most important element of being a nurse. The Nursing and Midwifery Council have changed the way you register to demonstrate you are fit to practice and using practice related feedback from patients, service users or carers and colleagues to improve your standards of care.

From April 2016 you have been required to go through a revalidation process every three years. The process consists of seven key elements.

You will have to:

  • Provide evidence of 35 hours of relevant Continuous Professional Development (CPD) within the last three years. 20 of these hours need to be participatory and therefore have to include any learning activity where you have interacted with other people
  • Have undertaken 450 hours of relevant practice over the last three years - this equates to 12 full time weeks based on 37.5 hours
  • Collect five pieces of third party feedback from a variety of sources (patients, service users, carers, peers, colleagues, etc.)
  • Reflect on this feedback and state how you will alter your practice
  • Have third party approval of your revalidation (this is likely to be another nurse e.g. your line manager)
  • Provide evidence of your professional indemnity/insurance
  • Declare that you are of good character and good current health so that you can practice safely unsupervised.

    
Each nurse will be responsible for their revalidation process, however the Trust is providing a range of materials and tools to help you.

Training events are available to support you and your staff to revalidate.

Appraisal

Ensure you discuss with your manager your evidence, reflection and revalidation progress at your Appraisal. This is available to download from the Appraisal intranet pages and must be used.
