Mentorship Updates are currently running to support the transition of nurses to the new 2018 NMC Standards for Education Supervision and Assessment. To find out how this could affect you, please click here.

The Learning Environment Team are currently developing a programme that will meet the standards of this new guidance. Courses and further information will be released in due course.

  •  Remember that the new NMC Standards for Supervision and Assessment will come into effect, for all universities except Surrey, from September 2019             
  • Practice Supervisor training dates are now available and bookable through the LEaD website

  • The new NMC Standards for Supervision and Assessment will come into effect, for all universities except Surrey, from September 2019.

  • Accredited Mentors who attend a transitional course will become Practice Assessors; a new role described within the NMC 2018 Standards.

  • If you are not already an accredited Mentor you will need to become a Practice Supervisor before becoming a Practice Assessor.

  • Practice Supervisor training is for registered nurses who do not already hold an accredited mentor qualification

  • Practice Assessor training will become available in due course.

  • You need to attend an annual face to face Mentor Update/Mentor Transition to New NMC Standards Update.
  • Complete your tri-ennual review when it is due.


        
  • Log on to the LEaD training website; for information about what to do if you are struggling to login to the LEaD website, click here

  • On the LEaD website search for “Mentor Transition to New NMC Standards” in the search box and then follow the suggested steps to book on to the course. 

  • Make sure you sign in when you attend the course in order that your training record will be updated. 

 

 

  • The NMC currently requires that every three years you need to show evidence that you have maintained your mentorship skills, knowledge and competence to remain on the mentor database

  • You need to mentor at least two students within the last three years

  • Practice teachers need to be registered on the same part/sub-part of the register

    as the students they are assessing i.e. Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) to assess SCPHN students, Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) sub-part to assess Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) students. Trainee practice teachers must be supervised by an existing sign off practice teacher on at least one occasion for signing off proficiency of a SCPHN student at the end of their final placement

  • You need to have completed a face to face annual mentor update (see above)

  • You need to go on the LEaD website, search for “NMC Triennial Review

    Verification”, and then complete the e-verification.  Your manager will need to verify that you have met your requirements for the triennial review

 

 

  • LEaD do not have a record that you have completed an NMC approved mentor preparation course. Please email the Learning Environment Team to advise us that you believe you are a registered mentor and we will advise you of what to do next.

 

 

  • Your qualification needs to be accredited by the NMC
  • You can contact the Learning Environment Team if you are unsure if your qualification meets NMC standards

 

        
  • Sign off mentors are not part of the new NMC 2018 Standards. 

  • Under the New NMC 2018 Standards for Supervision and Assessment Sign-off Mentors will no longer be required with effect from September 2019 with the exception of Surrey University      

  • For Surrey University the new Standards will come into effect from September 2020. Sign off mentors will be required until that date for Surrey students. 

  • "Sign-off Mentor Verification" is required on the LEaD website.
